So you’re interested in studying abroad? Studying in a different country comes with a variety of benefits, such as learning about new cultures, being exposed to different opportunities and languages, and giving you plenty of exciting memories. For some students, studying abroad is best done with a group of friends or people you can rely on. If you are part of a sorority, you may find that there is an opportunity for you and your sisters to study abroad together. This can be extremely exciting, especially for those who prefer having some touches of home with them. However, studying abroad with your sorority sisters aren’t going to be the same experience you have in your Greek house. Before you pack your bags, be sure to understand these 5 tips for studying abroad with your sorority sisters.
1. Pack Lightly
As a sorority sister, you likely fall victim to having a new outfit for every day or only wearing custom Greek Life clothing. While there is no harm in this, your wardrobe needs will be different while abroad. For instance, you will not be bombarded with all the social events you’re likely used to, so there’s no need to go overboard with your suitcase. Plus, with your sisters nearby, you all can plan to borrow stuff from each other instead of bringing these items of your own. And since you’ll be part of a new culture, there’s always the chance that you’ll want to invest in some of the clothing found in the places you are. After all, this will not only make you feel like you best fit in, but it will provide memories from your trip.
2. Get the Right Phone Plan
While you’re back in the States, you don’t have to worry about the multitude of phone calls and text messages you get from your sorority sisters. However, when you’re out of the country, these calls and text messages can become quite expensive if you’re not on the right phone plan. Be sure to talk to your sisters who are studying abroad and get a compatible plan. This way, if you plan on talking via phone or text while you’re away, you can rest assured you all won’t end up with expensive charges just to communicate.
3. Lean On Each Other
Being in a new country is going to be a challenge, but having your sorority sisters around can provide a nice level of comfort and reduce your homesickness. If you’re not staying in the same host house, be sure you know where your sisters are located so you can stop by and visit. It’s also a good opportunity to plan some time with or go to events with them so you can keep your bond while away. And don’t forget to send plenty of pictures and postcards to your other sorority sisters back home
4. But Still, Do Your Own Thing
When your sisters are out of the country with you, it will be easy to fall into your comfortable habits of only wanting to be around them and do things with them. However, you need to remember that you are in another country, and this may be the only time you’ll have to experience this culture. Break away from your comfort zone and do things by and for yourself. For instance, don’t be afraid to take that tour, especially if it’s something your other sisters aren’t interested in. Make friends with the locals and don’t be afraid to do things without your sisters every now and then. This will not only create opportunities for you but also generate plenty of fun and exciting memories you can cherish forever
5. Go Exploring
Being abroad will often give you the opportunity to check out other areas. For instance, if you are studying abroad in France, be sure to explore other countries that are nearby, such as Italy or Spain. And if you don’t want to travel alone, be sure to bring your sorority sisters along for the trip. This way, you will have safety in numbers and feel comfortable with those you are traveling with, but you’ll still be able to explore new areas and learn new things along the way.
Studying abroad is a great opportunity for those who are able to do so. If you plan on studying abroad with your sorority sisters, be sure to use these tips to make your experience the best it can possibly be.
