Anyone not hailing from Ahmedabad or someone unaware with the recent happenings of the city may find a sight very intriguing to note. A good look around some of the renowned colleges around the city will surely land their eyes on some of these odd entities in the college campus. Superficially these odd individuals are sober, well built and uniformed but in reality they are bouncers.
Yes, Ahmedabad colleges have decided to enhance the security measures a notch higher by deploying bouncers on their campus. Some colleges have already acted on this regarded and many are willing to follow suit. The colleges have felt that deploying these personnel will help them sanitize the campus like never before.
Interestingly, this sight has been greeted by many curious eyes as people are mostly habituated with seeing bouncers in night clubs, discotheques and bars where brawls and disorderly behaviour is more likely to be seen. But, seeing a bouncer in a college campus is bound to be highly unnatural to the unacknowledged person.
Sources say that the recent trend of keeping bouncers for security has cascaded down from the VC of Gujarat University himself who keeps as many as eight bouncers for his personal security. Colleges feel that their own university’s VC has shown them the ultimate solution for security related fiascos.
Till now four educational establishments in the city have resorted to such measures. They include S M Patel College of Commerce, GLS Institute of Commerce, H K Commerce and Arts College and Gujarat Law Society with the last one being an organization that runs many colleges in the state. These colleges are reportedly circumspect on ruffians and outsiders who often cause large scale disorderliness on the campus.
Since such incidents may bring disrepute to the college, the college authorities have taken to the proverb of “prevention is better than cure” with heart. They think that bouncers are the best solutions to admission season hassles that have become annual annual events. The excess number of individuals and outsiders during the time is an ideal setting for ruckuses. These bouncers will help their cause by simply keeping an eye on all the happenings while also acting for the prevention of any unwanted events.
College authorities have said, “We already have our own security guards to man the college but during the admission season it becomes too hard to control the entire situation jus by the aid of simple security guards. Sometimes the entire law and order of the campus gets entirely out of hand. Hence we have decided to deploy bouncers during this admission season and ensure that past unwarranted incidents never occur again.”
The college students and faculty also feel that the deployment of bouncers has made them feel secure. “Even though the deployment of bouncers has been costing the college authorities almost twice of their previous security bills yet they feel the safety comes first. When the reputation and credibility of a college are at stake, they need to be protected anyhow,” said a senior faculty from one of such colleges.
