In the Indian context, non-formal education has created and developed a limited meaning of education's alternative delivery system for children who are unable to participate in the elementary school that is part and parcel of formal education in India. Therefore, this type of education is restricted to providing a chance for all those children with some or the other reasons are out-of-school.
Non- Formal Education for dropouts
Non-formal education gives a second chance for all those children who are described often as dropouts. A large section of children is pullouts from formal education mainly because of cultural and economic irresistible impulse. A section of children is termed as stay-outs primarily because they aren't able to reach the primary school system in rural India. It is to be highly noted that stay-outs and pull-outs are together termed as push-outs who need non-formal education to a great extent.
Efforts by department of non-formal education
An alternative to formal Elementary Education is Non-Formal Education. During the early 1970's, nine states that were educationally backward in the nation were encouraged to immediately initiate experimental NFE centers. Later in 1988, the National Policy on Education was successfully introduced. The Central Government largely supported the full- fledged scheme of Non-Formal Education for the children of hilly region, desert and remote areas plus urban slums.

The state government in a well-planned manner implemented non-formal education for the benefit of children.

Even within limited success, this type of education has gained wide acceptance from all sections of the Indian population who really need for its children.

In India, most of the Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled caste are still below the line of poverty and their children aren't able to get any type of formal education. Non-Formal Education cater to the educational need of SC and ST in a great manner. Education is the need of the hour for the overall development of this particular community in India. They need to be brought forward to normal manner of personal and professional lifestyle.
