India education ranks third in the world. Indian government put great emphasis on education. Many initiatives are taken which clearly banned child labor and instead tried to prepare parents in remote areas of India to send them to go to school. In this way Indian education has changed a lot by years. But one major feature lacks in Indian education. There is hardly any good education facility for disabled children. Handicapped children do not have enough good schools and thus face obstacles in their studies.
In this aspect, Canada rules over India. Canadian education provides correct measures to give education to the students who have disabilities. They do not run different schools for them. Canadian government prefers to include disabled student into the classroom consisting of children with no physical disabilities. This initiative seemed somewhat hard because it was not easier for the physically challenged students to cope up with the pace of education.
To overcome this issue, the Canadian government called for meetings where school teachers, students with their parents were present. The psychiatrist and occupational therapists were present who discussed the physical and mental conditions of those disabled people. It was said that it would be hard for them to cope up if the education system did not make changes to balance with the needs of the disabled children.
In India there are hardly any such initiatives taken. The Indian government must take those measures to find out ways so that disabled children can get a good education. The Canadian government also took measures like building elevators which were specially designed for the disabled students. Similar measures were made in Canadian schools in school sports and other Co curricular activities. Hostels of schools have separate special accommodation for physically challenged students.
Canadian schools had students who served volunteer duties to help this disabled student. They helped them to note down the class works and special notes during the exam. The school provided these children with extra time for examination and had text books of same syllabus but different formats. All these accommodations and facilities were determined by the Learning specialists or Disability Advisors who had sufficient knowledge about their needs and problems.
In spite all these measures, Canadian government failed in fulfilling some of the conditions required for disabled students. Types of Disabilities varied among all the physically challenged students. It was somewhat tough to make those children learn the subjects like the normal students. It was not possible to accommodate students in all types of programmes made for the normal scholars.
The Indian education system does not have such measures and it is quite a major problem of educating disabled children. After the episodes of “Satyamev Jayate “, it was clear that Indian education truly faces many obstacles and problems for educating physically challenged kids. But initiatives can be taken like the Canadian government. Although Canadian schools failed in fulfilling some measures but it won in distributing education to the physically challenged kids.
Indian government succeeds in improving the standard of education. But it should also be kept in mind that although the children are physically challenged, still they are the future of the nation. A little step towards their betterment is indeed required.
