Presidency University has been famous as one of the India’s oldest and historic educational institute. It is considered as the pride of Kolkata’s eternal pride in the field of education. Incidentally, three years back presidency university was conferred upon the title of full-fledged university which it meant it gained absolute autonomous status after a prolonged time. This decision of making the university autonomous marked as a milestone for the institute as many felt that the university received what it deserved after a lot of years. The university, this year finally planned its own first convocation to be held on 22nd August.
The convocation is indeed planning to be made a very big event with the participation of a group of famous foreign alumni. Mentors as well as council members established in various other parts of the world is also planned to accompany them. The vice-chancellor of the presidency university, Malabika Sarkar says that the event will be consisted of many as a 1300 people. So to accommodate all, the event is being planned to take place at Derozio auditorium.
The vice chancellor also added that in this first convocation ceremony, the university will be awarding the degrees to the successful MSc and MA candidates only. She has also asked for the approval of the governor for awarding DSc and Honoris Causa D.Lit to only two selected candidates. Malabika Sarkar also mentions that 2014 would be the first year of passing out for the undergraduate students.
The ceremony will have many invited guests and along with them, the head of the departments and the council members for sharing the Dias. The parents of the under graduating students have also been invited to celebrate the convocation day.
The presidency university has also decided to hold an oath taking session in details by following the lines of the University of Oxford and University of Cambridge. For this event, the vice chancellor, Malabika Sarkar, says that the passage to be read out during the oath taking session has not been chalked out yet. The passage is planned to make it a lot motivating and interesting so that the students can get inspired from them.
The passage for the oath would be such that the students may develop a sense of pride in their heart and they would feel about the Alma matter in them. The students would thus take a challenge in them to become a good citizen and serve the country. The vice-chancellor says that the edited passage would soon be out which would contain all the precious matters.
The graduate degrees which are planned to award the eligible students are thought of making it a little different from the earlier ones. This is actually meant to highlight the sense of an autonomous decision which the students can preserve with them with a pride. She also mentions that the governor, M K Narayan would be giving these degrees.
The big day would be starting its celebration from sharp 9.30 a.m. and would continue with the set of events. A VC’s development donation camp will be also getting joined along with the ceremony.
