Engineering and technical education have been developing faster in India other than any part of the world. Due to rapid industrialization and economic growth our country stands the second largest number with perspective to students pursuing engineering course. Recent advancements in scientific, technological and industrial fields gave India the fame of emerging global power. Developments also are seen in nuclear, space and missile technologies.
Overview of Engineering Education
One of the branches of science and technology concerned with building of engines, designing and structuring. The growths of educational facilities have been phenomenon during the last decade and are accredited under AICTE. This special body took care of the educational facilities and advancements of subjects in engineering education. Comparatively, Mechanical and Electrical engineering seems to be older than Civil Engineering.
Side by side the scientific and technology advancements have brought in diversified fields of continuous learning. At present more than 2400 colleges is existing bringing in about 9 lakh students. Technical man power quality is lacking maintenance due to tremendous quantitative growth. The world today needs good engineering talents to find global solutions and resolve the challenges faced by humanity in social and economic well-being.
Market Status of Private Engineering Education in India.
Indian youths have nowadays huge potential of engaging themselves in higher education like engineering. The resulting quality of the engineering graduates is not satisfying to the requirements of the global market. Private engineering colleges are blending out to be providing 87% engineering graduates in the country. The reasons for such poor scenario is due to inadequate physical infrastructure, poor learning quality, shortage of faculty, outdated curriculum and syllabus, inadequate training, absence of R & D activities and ineffective links with the industry.
Complete mismatch taking place between the knowledge gained by the students of engineering colleges and practical knowledge given in the industry. It is seen that engineering graduates are weak in professional terms and taking long time in job industrial training. Emphasis is given only on learning and acquiring skills for passing the examination.
Moreover, students are not frequently introduced to the practical industry learning as a result there is less cost of practice on individual basis. If we look around we will find more than average engineering graduates are unemployed only due to one main reason that is poor performance from the privately financed engineering colleges. Lack of accreditation is another major issue in private engineering colleges resulting in violating of educational principles.
Levels of Engineering Education
Engineering education is available at five levels. The lowest level being training offered by the Industrial Training Institutes across the country. The higher level is the three year diploma courses in various engineering departments of private colleges. The degrees offered are diploma, BE/B.Tech and ME/M.Tech. The duration and eligibility of the courses changes from time to time depending on the technology developments. Candidates are free to choose any specialized topic during their study at the first degree level.
With increasing demand of technical manpower all over the world, expansion of technical education in institutions people have become more active in the recent developments. Therefore, there is a need to build quality in technical education system to produce practical manpower to handle all the tasks of nation building effectively.
