After the class 12 exams the students are ready for a new life in colleges. They look forward to get good marks in their board examinations in order to crack into the best Universities in the city. Any student who stays in Kolkata has always dreamt of studying at Jadavpur University. It is amongst the best in the country. The University has a very good faculty and a great campus that allows students to have a lot of activities other than just studies. The University is regarded very highly especially in the engineering department.
Ragging begins on the 1st day:
Once the new students enter the campus they are introduced to a new world. For the first time they have been placed outside the secured school environment. This is where they are introduced to the real world. The seniors are entitled to a session with the new students. They have the right to ask for an introduction but some seniors take it too far. They resent to harsh methods to show their authority on the new comers. Some of them assault the new students physically to prove their supremacy in the college.
Ragging in the hostel:
Ragging is a social crime and is punishable under the Indian Court of law. Some of the students, who come from other states of the country, and other countries to study abroad, stay in the hostels provided by the college. This is where the ragging issues reach its peak. Students are asked to do stuff that are not acceptable. If the juniors disagree to do then they are tortured physically and mentally by the senior students. They do not get caught because the supervision in the hostels is not strict. This is very bad for some students.
Ragging is a punishable offence:
Ragging is a punishable offence. Students who are found to be involved in ragging can be expelled from the college. This could ruin a student’s career. Ragging creates a scenario of fear among the junior students. Some of the junior students often leave the college in order to escape the ragging from the seniors. Some students who are strong protest and some who are weak often tend to attempt suicides. So ragging must be stopped in the country in order to introduce better education standards in the country.
The latest incident:
Two 4th year engineering students were suspended from Jadavpur University for ragging a second year student. A brawl between the students lead to the seniors slapping the junior and the next morning human excreta was found in front of the junior’s room. The junior complained about this to the anti ragging cell of the University. The authorities looked into the matter and found that the seniors were guilty. One student was expelled for a year and the other one was expelled for a semester. Steps like this should be made an example to stop ragging in colleges. That will help to create a better environment among the students.
