On the 178th anniversary of the La Martini ere School for boys in Calcutta, Leila Seth was the guest f honor at the event. She is the first woman judge of a state high court. She was the judge for the Nibhaya Rape case. Moments before the decision was made the judge was giving a speech regarding how sexual education could help to transform the society.
She strongly believes that sex education should be a part of the school curriculum. Though there is no provision for this kind of a subject in the Indian education system the education boards need to implement these in their courses. It could help to make students understand the need to be a good citizen. It will help them to understand the consequences of violence and women abuse.
She said that the people who committed crimes like rape and other women abuse needed severe punishment. These people had no right to live. Harsh punishment was finally ordered for the accused people. They will be hanged to death. Even though the decision was slow it came out right. People need to understand the need of respecting women. Unless people learn to respect women these things will continue to happen.
She also said that there was no point in encouraging the students to compete against their classmates and other students in the board examinations. Urging the students to compete will only make them violent. Instead of competing against each other they should look forward to their own specialties. Every student has his or her own special forte and they should concentrate on that instead of competing against each other in examinations.
She feels that every school should start sex education. At a certain point the students grows curious about sex. Their bodies start maturing but they are not open to ask their parents about their curiosities. This is when the school should step in between to take care of their doubts and curiosities. This will help to release their aggression and curiosity in a more productive way rather that going wild and assaulting women.
The need for value education is essential in the country. The schools should provide proper values to their students in order to make the students understand the world. The students must be taught to respect the constitution of the country and its preamble. When this is done every student ill want to be a good citizen. The students should know the values of their country6 and the society that they belong to.
Environmental education has been made a part of the ICSE board and CBSE board curriculum. The students must realize that industrialization is important but not at the cost of the environment. If there are no trees and the rivers are all poisoned from the dirty water waste from the factories then there will be nothing to do. The people and the students need to understand that they cannot start chewing money when they feel hungry.
