Ask any college student and he / she will tell you that the best time of his / her life was spent in the hostel! For a student who steps out of his house for the first time after passing out of the school, the world looks a scary place. On top of that, the pressure of living with hundreds of unknown people at an entirely new place can easily get to the nerves of the students.
However, as the days go by, you quickly realize that hostel life is exactly the opposite of what you thought it to be. It is fun. It is exciting. It is crazy. And yes, it is memorable. If you are planning to join a hostel for the first time in your life, we have a few tips for you here –
- Leave your ‘introvert’ image
Each and every hostel has a bunch of people who become famous in no time. Everyone loves them and wants to hang out with them. If you want to be one of them, you need to be an ‘extrovert’. Waiting for others to come and talk to you doesn’t work in a hostel!
- Sometimes it is ok to break rules!
Every hostel has that one person that every student hates – warden! The rules made by the warden are the rules that the hostel runs on. While some rules are for your good, some rules have the capacity to irritate you to the core. For example – ‘no one is allowed to leave his / her room after 10 pm’. If you abide by all the rules at all the times, you might just find yourself alone!
- Get used to a food that tastes different from home!
No matter how great is your hostel mess, it can never replace that taste of your mother’s hands. The faster you realize this, the easier it would be for you to settle into hostel life. Most of the students end up spending over 50% of their pocket money on outside food, since they can’t bear the food cooked in the mess!
If you keep on saying ‘No’ to all the plans your friends make, they would soon stop asking you! And this is the last thing you would want. Be it a movie or an outing; learn to be a part of your gang. Even if you are not in a mood to party, doing it for the group would surely make you the rockstar of your gang!
- Keep a tab on money spent
Most of you would be operating independent bank accounts for the first time in your life. In such a situation, it is extremely easy to be careless and splurge money, and before you know it, you would be calling home every weekend and asking them for the refill! Keeping a notebook and dividing the group expenses equally among friends works well for everyone. Apart from ensuring a healthy relation among friends, it also keeps a check on the money spending spree!
Most importantly, do not forget to rejoice your time. You would never get it back no matter how bad to want it. If you have some other cool hostel tips, do share them with us in the comments below.
