The Election Commission of India has felt that it is much needed that the voters of India be educated and trained about a thing or two. Keeping in mind the still high rates of illiteracy and ignorance among a vast portion of the citizens, especially in the rural areas, the Election Commission has thus appointed the National Literacy Mission to educate the voters.
Following this, the Election Commission of India has awarded National Literacy Mission with the status of its partner for its benevolent duty and assistance. A formal agreement has thus been drafted between the two bodies and they have agreed to proceed on with the recommended process of educating the voting masses.
The agreement means that from now on, the officers, members and staff of the National Literacy Mission will have to work for two causes together and simultaneously. Not only will they carry on with their usual duties but they will now also look after educating the voters and ensure their participation in the electoral processes.
This process of education among the voters will ensure their participation in the electoral processes of the nation and make them aware of their duties for the nation. Awareness among the voters will help the nation to achieve greater voter turnouts during elections. Ignorance among the voters about the entire poll process will be minimized with such an effort. Knowledge of the complicated electoral processes will be elucidated by the officers of Nation Literacy Mission to the voters who are ignorant or unacknowledged about the titbits of the same.
The National Literacy Mission volunteers will perform their duties in varied ways. Adult education will include the topic of elections that will be studied while going through the subject. The aspects of democracy, electoral processes, registration of valid voters and cancellation of invalid ones, fair polling and many more will be preached and performed by the volunteers. The publicity and propagation of their mission and ideas will also be the duty of the said lot of volunteers.
Besides the aforesaid duties, the members and officers of the National Literacy Mission will also assist the election registration officer with his work, registration and cancellation of voters, identifying BLOs, providing technical reinforcements for voter education and planning varied activities as well as working as resource people.
The effort of the Election Commission is being lauded in many circles for their sheer diligence in making the elections a more pious and respectable affair with heightened credibility. The educated masses think that, “It will also help the illiterate to learn a few chapters of knowledge and wisdom in the process”. It is expected that it will be highly beneficial to the illiterate strata of people by making them educated in the meanwhile.
“I have never seen such commitment from the Election commission to ensure rightful education among the voters for making the elections a better experience for the country,” expressed a senior citizen who has seen many an elections before. Notwithstanding the aforesaid facts, the most laudable credit remains the tactfully coordinated and orchestrated functioning of two separate government bodies simultaneously to make elections a better affair than the past.
