Dr Laurence White, Lecturer in Psychology and Dr Sarah Collins, Associate Professor in Animal Behaviour and Welfare, Plymouth University
Chimpanzees, our closest relatives, relax by stroking each other’s fur, picking off twigs and nibbling fleas. “Grooming” is crucial for social networking and stimulates release of pleasurable hormones. In the six million years since our evolutionary paths parted, we have developed a more hands-off way to win friends and influence people – gossip.
In this month’s CogTalk, Dr Laurence White and Dr Sarah Collins debate human speech and animal communication. Are we really unique in sharing complex messages through sounds and gestures? How can we produce and understand sentences that have never been said before? Why can’t chimpanzees learn to speak, even when raised with human babies? And if cats and dogs could talk, would we understand them?
Laurence White is a Lecturer in Psychology at Plymouth University and investigates how we produce and understand spoken language, and how we learn it as babies. Sarah Collins is Associate Professor in Animal Behaviour and Welfare at Plymouth University and is interested in animal communication.
