A lecture by Roger T. Hanlon, Senior Scientist, Marine Biological Laboratory and Professor (MBL), Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Brown University
No animal group on the planet can change pattern, color, and posture with the diversity and speed of the cephalopods—octopus, cuttlefish, and squid. The elaborate skin of these animals is flexible and organized with an array of pigments and structural coloration elements that manipulate available light with high efficiency. Hanlon will illustrate the dynamic nature of this skin and extract some principles of operation that may provide a bio-inspired approach to the development of "smart clothes."
Lecture is free and open to the public. Doors open at 4:45 p.m.; lecture begins at 5 p.m.
