According to the data provided by the Union government, 13,017 students from J&K have received the benefits of the PM's special scholarship scheme, which is being implemented since 2011. The main aim of the scheme is to encourage the students of J&K to pursue the higher education outside of their state.
According to the reports, HRD Minister of State, Dr. Mahendra Nath Pandey told Rajya Sabha in written that government has taken several measures to ensure that all the deserving candidates receive the benefits of the scheme.
"As a result of various initiatives including creation of ten supernumerary quota in Engineering Colleges, more number of students are taking admission in professional courses," the minister said
The minister further explained that the scheme aims to provide 5000 fresh scholarships every year (4500 in general degree courses, 250 in engineering and 250 in Medical) and that there is also a provision of the interchangeability of the slots, which is if the number of students fall short in general degree course then higher number of students will be accommodated in the professional degree course.
Till now, 160 students received the scholarship from the scheme in 2014-15, 1402 students received the scholarships in 2015-16 and 2240 students in 2016-17.
