President Pranab Mukherjee said that he will talk to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the matter of developing and reviving the Vikramshila University, an ancient Buddhist learning institute, on the lines of Nalanda University.
"Vikramshila had guided the path for the nation and promoted research in the past. I will talk to PM Modi to develop and revive Vikramshila University," Mukherjee said in his address at a public meeting after he visited the ruins of Vikramshila University in Bihar's Bhagalpur district.
He further added that Vikramshila is an institute of higher education and is not a museum and again it will be developed as the same. President began his three day visit to West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar on April 1 and reached Bhagalpur on the eve of Sunday where he also paid a visit to the university's museum.
The remains of the university had been neglected for years, which once was the center of Buddhist learning during the ancient learning. The university was founded in the late 8th century and its purpose was to complement the two other world class universities namely, Nalanda and Takshila.
The university stood strong for four centuries and then was destroyed by the Bakhtiyar Khilji of the Delhi Sultanate in an attack.
