B.Tech or engineering, as it is better known, has always been one of the most coveted educational courses in the entire country. Now, the Universities are attracting students by offering them a B.Tech degree even in courses which have no relation with engineering. The latest example was at the Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University, Kanpur, where the students of Bachelor of Fine arts (BFA) were given a degree of Bachelor of Technology in Painting and Fine Arts!
Though it attracted diverse reactions from different sections, it later came to light that it was a goof up due to a printing mistake at the University. Degrees of as many as 29 students belonging to the department of Fine Arts were taken back after the mistake came into light.
None of the teachers of the department scrutinized the degree before handing it over to the students. It was only when the students took a closer look at their degree did they notice the blunder. The department took immediate action and took back the degrees with a promise of issuing a new and correct degree within the next couple of days.
Professor JV Vaishamoayan accepted the responsibility for the fiasco as the vice chancellor of CSJM University. He assured that the students will soon get their hands on the correct degrees.
Before anyone realized the gravity of the error, the students made a joke out of it and said that they had become 'B Tech In Fine Arts'. They are in the first ones in the entire country to get this degree and will probably be the last ones too, provided that such as fiasco doesn't repeat itself.
