Bareilly: The senior authorities at
the Bareilly College decides to flag off the establishment of Dharna sthal for agitating
students in a park which is located near the principal's office. The Dharna Sthal is actually the place to display their protest. Modern amenities like tin
roofed shelter, benches, fans and toilets are well equipped at the location.
The management decided to put forth
the decision into action due to the nuisance created by a crowd of protesting
students inside the Principal's office. This leads to interruption in the on-going
administrative work. Nevertheless, there are some teachers who have sneered at
the decision and describe it as a worthless pronouncement that will summon
students and make them sit in objection all day, fighting over trivial issues. Even
the student's leader possessed a similar way of thinking.
The verdict of inaugurating the Dharna Sthal was announced over a meeting of the Principal and teachers which was held on
19th November. A notice was circulated throughout the college and amongst the Heads of the departments, about the decision taken during the
meeting. There was no mention of Dharna Sthal in the circular. It just mentioned the construction of a park near the Principal's office. The vicinity
shall be embraced with some permanent facilities like sitting accommodation,
tin shelter sheds and toilets.
Mr Dev Murti, the secretary of
Management committee uttered "A separate site will be arranged for agitated
students so that they do not hinder the evening batch students and also do not
act as a disturbing agent to the official administrative work.
The principal, R B Singh spoke "Similar
to our Jantar Mantar, a fixed spot shall be designated in the campus to carry
out revolt against the subject matter which the students think is prejudice. Earlier,
students staged their demonstrations in our cabins which caused a severe effect
on our daily work". Mr Singh further said that the site is likely to get ready
by next year.
There are some teachers that oppose
the decision. A senior faculty member said "It is a preposterous idea to set up
a permanent location for students to carry out futile protests to fight over
irrelevant issues. This will attract more students and the place shall stay
overcrowded the entire day. Alongside, there exists no promising warranty in the
commitment from the student's side to adhere to the fixed spot. Even the
announcement of providing toilet facilities and fans to agitators is worthless".
The next teacher in line who did not
wish to be identified said "The resolution shall call for more trouble along
with a law and order problem. Never take agitating students for granted as they
may jump into the rampage by destroying toilets, fans and benches".
Students from several organizations
are not happy with such decision. "Earlier when we protested inside the college
administrative block premises, the officials had to listen to our protest as
they faced difficulty in their work. But setting up a protest at Dharna Sthal
does not assure whether the management will come there to listen to our
melancholies", said
Avneesh Choubey, the district
coordinator and it was supported by Mr Ambedkar Chatra Sabha.
State joint
organizing secretary, ABVP, Mr Mahesh Rathore dictated that the initiative will
create problems when any genuine student with an appealing problem approaches
to the top level authorities to get his problem rectified.
