Ever since their inception, the IIITs have emerged as one of the most premier institutes of IT studies in the country. With the latest Indian Institute of Information Technology (Amendment bill) 2017 being approved by the cabinet in parliament, this is only expected to grow further.
Once the bill takes the shape of an act after being duly passed by the parliament, IITDM, Kurnool would be granted the status of an institute of national importance and would have the power to award degrees to students.
The bill which has already been approved by the Union cabinet, includes Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing (IIITDM), Kurnool along with the other IIITs. With this, the IIITDM would become only the 5th institute in the country to be a centrally funded IIIT. The funds for the institutes operations would be provided by the HRD (Human Resource Development) Ministry.
The academic session at IIITDM Kurnool began with a couple of sessions in 2015-16. As per a report in The Indian Express, the central government has also agreed to a proposal regarding the opening of a new IIIT in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool.
About IIITs
There are presently 20 IIITs running in the country. These are funded jointly by the IT industry and the state government of the institute. Established by the HRD ministry, 4 new IIITs are expected to be setup in the country at Tripura, Surat, Bhopal and Kakinada.
