It looks like that the choice-based credit system used by
Delhi University for its first semester has created utter confusion as in this
system of relative grading rewriting the paper would mean writing a paper of
CAT or JEE as the second time too, the grade would depend upon performance of
others.
Abha Dev Habib (executive council member and physics
teacher) argues that rewriting is a waste as the second time too the grade
would depend upon performance of the batch leading to depression and hardship
among students. Further other teachers are arguing that this system is a double
edged sword as people who have to work hard will suffer and those who are
academically strong will also pay the price. This is because top scorers have
to share the grade with dozen others and those with low scores may fail despite
scoring above 40 as relative grading has pushed up the pass scores. Also,
grades won't be affected if a person takes re-test so, students can't go for
re-valuation either.
Dev Habib further says that this system would curb those who
want to take part in extracurricular activities. They would be less reluctant
and what about those who took admission due to extracurricular or sports quota
as not every student joining DU is that competitive.
