National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship development Board (NSTEDB) implements a plan scheme of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) viz. “S&T Entrepreneurship Development” for promotion of knowledge based technology driven entrepreneurship. The scheme supports a variety of programmes for promotion of entrepreneurship. Some of the major programmes supported under the scheme are : Technology Business Incubators (TBIs) and Science & Technology Entrepreneurs Parks (STEPs) for developing an innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem in and around academic institutions; Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centres at academic institutions to encourage innovation among Science and Technology (S&T) students; S&T Entrepreneurship Development project to promote micro-enterprises in backward areas in the country; organization of Entrepreneurship Awareness Camps (EACs) in academic institutions to create awareness among students and faculty on entrepreneurship; Entrepreneurship Development Programmes (EDPs) and Technology Based EDPs and Women Entrepreneurship Development Programmes (WEDPs) to trains S&T persons in various facets of entrepreneurship; Faculty Development Programmes to train faculty for organizing and promoting entrepreneurship in academic institutions. Besides these programmes, NSTEDB also supports various projects for scouting, supporting and scaling up of innovations and entrepreneurship.
NSTEDB nurtures and provides networking opportunities for various stakeholders involved in implementing projects supported by NSTEDB. Technology Business Incubators and S&T Entrepreneurs Parks numbering about 66 have formed a formal association called The Indian STEP and Business Incubators Association (ISBA). ISBA is working as good networking platforms for all stakeholders. Other agencies which are networked with NSTEDB are Institutes of Entrepreneurship Development created by various state governments; Technical Consultancy Organisations in various states promoted by all India Financial Institutions, Banks and State Governments; Academic and R&D Institutions; and Non Governmental Organisations engaged in promotion of entrepreneurship.
Details of various entrepreneurial initiatives are described at part (a) of the answer. NSTEDB under the plan scheme S&T Entrepreneurship Development has incurred an expenditure of Rs.39.56 crore (2010-11) Rs. 43.61 crore (2011-12) and approximately Rs.41.00 crores (2012-13) during last three years.
NSTEDB enrolled approximately 80,000 students/prospective entrepreneurs/faculty during 2012-13 for training on various facets of entrepreneurship through its various training programmes.
