Multiple students, preparing for the competitive exams, committed suicide in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. These students committed suicides due to the pressure of performance following which, the education ministers of both the states held separate meetings and issued several guidelines to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
Andhra Pradesh HRD and Education Minister G Srinivasa Rao held a meeting with the representatives of the various residential junior colleges, education department and academics and told the colleges to reduce the study hours.
“Students are studying from 4.30 am till 11 pm with two breaks of 15 minutes each and lunch break of 30 minutes. They are totally stressed out. We asked them to reduce the study hours and introduce an hour for yoga or sports or TV. Colleges must have counselors to take care of struggling students,ʼʼRao said.
CM Kadiyam Srihari, Telangana Deputy suggested setting up counseling centers in the colleges. He also holds the education portfolio.
