In what can be hailed as a brilliant initiative, weavers in
Odisha will soon get access to certificate courses in weaving and that too,
free of cost.
The programme will be available to weavers living at
Kantapalli of Sonepur and Sagarpalli of Bargarh district.
Weavers taking training under government's Unnat Bharat
Abhiyan will also hone their skills
Dr Abhilash Nayak , the regional director of IGNOU
Bhubaneswar suggested that in order to enhance their prowess of designing
clothes and dresses, weavers need to learn the best and latest practices.
"We will connect the weavers with the government
offices through information and communication technology (ICT). They will get
idea about use of new technology for their betterment through our
training," he added.
He said that IGNOU has come up with four certificate courses
for members of weavers' family, the four courses being computer literacy
programme (CLP), Bachelor Preparatory Programme (BPP), NGO management and
certificate course on entrepreneurship. BPP is a special programme under which,
a school or college dropout can get the chance to directly gain admission into
bachelor's degree. She/he can face an entrance examination and then join the
Bachelor's programme.
The time period stipulated for the completion of these
courses is six months. Family members of weavers, who want to avail the
benefit, will have to enroll themselves at the IGNOU study centre which is
nearest to them, in both the districts.
Scheduled caste and scheduled tribe candidates in
undergraduate programmes will also get fee
exemption. Subject matters will be translated from English to Odia for better
understanding of students. IGNOU sources revealed that these initiatives were
aimed at helping the family members of the weavers.
