NEW DELHI: When the news about IIT fee revision came out, it made a lot of waves in the country. Now there is an update regarding the same.
The HRD (Human Resource Development) Ministry said that IIT fee hike declared recently will be applicable on admissions that take place from academic year 2016-17 onwards. The students presently studying would continue to pay fee at the existing rates.
From the upcoming academic session, the government had recently decided to raise the annual fees for undergraduate courses from existing Rs 90,000 to Rs 2 lakh, a rise of 122 per cent.
After the gripes by students of Kharagpur, the HRD (Human Resource Development) ministry gave out the explanation stating that students who are already enrolled in undergraduate courses have been secured from the 122% fee hike.
The order from HRD Ministry came a day after IIT Kharagpur students objected by yelling slogans at the campus against the fee hike. IIT Kharagpur director Partha Pratim Chakraborty wrote a letter to students saying that the protests have left him "very unhappy".
He said, "In this case, many undergraduates students did not have the basic politeness to first involve with us before creating a disturbance and made some very uncommon statements on those receiving the waivers."
Chakraborty said, "Many students made disparaging remarks expecting that better sense would prevail in the future, in the social media, other than voicing their problems which was completely unwarranted."
