The matter of students committing suicides is not only a threat to the educational institutes but also, raises the question on the Indian Education System. In order to deal with the problem of students committing suicides, IIT Kharagpur has taken to turn off the lights of the campus for one hour every evening. Not only this saves tremendous amount of energy but also, forces the students to come out of their hostel rooms and take a break from their virtual lives on laptops and internet. This gives them a chance to socialize with one another and share a cup of coffee and tea. It is only id 2017 and IIT Kharagpur has already seen three students committing suicide.
“Once the lights are turned off, all the students are expected to come out of their room. Normally those students who spend maximum time in their room and do not interact with others, they are also forced to come out of their room and mingle with others,” Manish Bhattacharjee, Dean of student's affairs at IIT Kharagpur, told Quartz.
In comparison to other institutes IITS have more frequent cases of suicides, suicide attempts and the leading cause of these negative steps is the depression.
Seeing suicides as a rising trend among the students institutes are now organizing parent teacher meetings and providing counseling facilities to the students. IIT Kharagpur has also started a Facebook page where counselors are available 24x7 to help the students. IIT Guwahati has started a performance arts facility called ‘Center for Creativityʼ where students can dance, sing and play their favorite musical instruments.
Sessions like tree hugging and interacting with the alumni who have dealt with the depression in the past are also being organized.
