CHENNAI: Talking about inadequacy of the education system, Tibetan
spiritual leader Dalai Lama pointed out that the education system needs to be
such that it improves the internal qualities of humans as well. He mentioned
that serious rethinking needs to be done in terms of improving the current education system to incorporate both physical and
emotional aspects of human beings.
He said that throughout human history, all devastating acts
can ultimately be traced to negative human emotions. Hence there is a strong
need to neutralize these using constructive emotions. He also stated that the
human existence has been based on the foundations of compassion, which is a
positive thing. Had it been otherwise, there would not have been any hope for
The first-ever Abdul Kalam SevaRatna Awards were organized by
the Madras Management Association in relationship with Abdul Kalam Vision India
Movement at Music Academy, with Dalai Lama being the chief guest.
He grieved that his generation of people have created a lot
of problems for the planet, and the responsibility now rests on the present
generation to rescue and build a happy 21st century.
He reminisced his visits to Chennai during 1950's and
1960's, and pointed out to the steep increase in number of constructions. He
said that the world has evolved materialistically, but peace has sapped out of
people's lives. Material development provides only physical comfort but
modernization does not necessarily bring us inner peace, he said.
He said that India has a great historic significance, with
its long history being propounded on the principles of non-violence and
religious harmony. India truly has the potential to bring about this peace in

Awards, he said that it is a very general tendency to relax after being
acknowledged. Hence, one must stay put and continue with the good work.
