More than 6000 engineering seats are still vacant in various engineering colleges even after the 6th round of counseling. These engineering colleges include IITs, NITs, IIITs and other colleges which centrally funded by the government.
Currently, 7th round of admission is going on.
Across various IITs there are total of 26 seats vacant in most popular courses such as Computer Science and Technology. Most of these seats are vacant in the newer IITs such as Indore, Patna, Goa, Jammu, Dharwad and Jodhpur.
Similar is the case with the electrical engineering in which there are 26 seats are still vacant.
This year, even the prestigious institutes like IIT-B and IIT-D have vacant seats. IIT-B has one vacant seat in the civil engineering and IIT-D has two vacant seats in the same discipline. Overall, IIT-D has 10 vacant seats.
"There could be several reasons.... Some candidates prefer institute over stream and many others want to pursue stream of their choice. What is surprising is that most of these are in the open category, which means there are candidates, but they don't want to join these courses," said an admissions dean.
At the beginning of 7th round of counseling, IIT-M has 20 seats vacant across various disciplines.
