Showing their protest against the fee hike, around 150 students of IIT-B started hunger strike on the campus premises. Students displayed their agitation against the increased fees by starting a march on the campus.
The tuition fee of the IIT-B is still the same but there are heavy hikes on other services such as there is a 300 percent hike in the hostel fee, the fee for the gym has been increased by 167 percent, exam, registration and medical-fee have been increased by 100 percent. There is also an increase of 30-50 percent on other services.
“The students met the director yesterday. The board will meet once again to review the hikes and come to an understanding. They have to be patient,” an IIT-B spokesperson told PTI.
“These fees have not been revised for over 20 years, and to maintain top class facilities this has to be considered,” the spokesperson said.
IIT-B director Devang Khakhar was unavailable for the comments on the issue. Students of the IIT-B formed an alliance by the 'Students against Fee Hike' and submitted presentations and sent emails to the administration of the college regarding the same. Students have only one more week to comply to the fee hike and seeing this they have intensified their protest against the fee hike.
IIT-B will take the final decision on the fee hike in the board meeting which is due in August.
