On Thursday, Students from different cities staged a protest outside the office of University Grants Commission for scrapping the National Eligibility Test in July. This year, the exam will only held in November.
The protest was led by Left-leaning All India Studentsʼ Association (AISA) and Students Federation of India (SFI) and their demand was to conduct the test, like previous years, twice a year.
"It was through the notification published by the Central Board of Secondary Education on June 6 that we got to know that the upcoming NET exam will be held on November 19. It means the exam, which used to be held in July as well, is effectively skipped,” said Sucheta De, national president, AISA.
The students also raised their concern over the reduction of the cap to qualify for the NET exam. It has been reduced to 6 percent as opposed to 15 percent. The protesting students also started an online petition by the name 'Save NET Exam' which they will submit to the UGC chairman.
