A sudden change in trends of admission in the premier
technical institution National Institute of Technology-Surathkal (NIT-K) has
been observed in the last three years, with the joining of more and more girls.
It is becoming difficult for NIT to accommodate them.
The numbers are rising in every sphere viz graduation,
masters even doctoral studies in engineering streams. Civil, chemical, computer
and Information Technology Engineering are the subjects which are most demanded
by girls.
In B Tech Engineering courses, 153 girl students enrolled in
the year 2013-14, while number jumped to 198 girl students enrolling in
academic year 2014-15. Similarly, in M Tech in Engineering courses, 123 female
students enrolled in year 2013-14, while the numbers rose to 159 in academic
year 2014-15.
According to Dean of Academic, Katta Venkataraman, it's the
institution's ranking which is the main attraction (despite several other
reasons) for more and more young girls joining to NIT-K.
The trend is increasing as more parents are allowing their
daughters to pursue higher education, so they are joining NIT's as per the
Dean. He also stated that in this year's convocation, half of gold medals were
awarded to ladies in masters owing to the fact that there was a huge crowd of
girls applying for master's degree.
He pointed out that
the girl students are coming in the NIT campus across different regions of
India including candidates from foreign such as Sri Lanka, Nepal, African
continent and Yemen. The girls despite doing well in studies (applying for
higher studies) are also able to get jobs easily.
In order to accommodate the number of increasing girl students
in the campus, a building for 250 students is being constructed as the
institute was finding it difficult to accommodate them in a hostel.
Not only masters, numbers have increased in PhD as well,
with 79 in year 2013-14 to 85 girl students in 2014-15. Civil, chemical,
computer and Information Technology Engineering are the most demanded subjects
by girls.
Some of the students of Information Technology and Chemical
Engineering- Laxmi Prasad, Harshita Naik and Shreya Shetty said that the main
reason for increase is easy patterns of competitive exams. Recently, there have
been some changes in JEE Main Exams, which is a must exam to enter NITs and girls are
faring well in these exams. The next reason is that NIT-K Surathkal is one of
the best institutions in India, so girls feel proud joining here.
