Some institutions have established off-campus centers which deem to be universities without prior approval of UGC or that of the HRD ministry so; UGC has set up a committee to look into all aspects.
The committee would include UGC members Prof H Devaraj, Prof Mohammad Miyan, Prof Sanjay Govind Dhande and Dr KN Shanti apart from a member convener.
UGC had issued notices to several leading institutions, which are deemed universities and had set up off campus centers without prior approvals.
Another highlight is decision taken to set up Chairs in various Universities in Indian classical languages of Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Odia.
A statutory body, the UGC (University Grants Commission) was set up by the UGC Act 1956. It comes under the purview of the Ministry of Human Resource Development and is situated in New Delhi with 6 regional centers spread across the entire country. It is currently headed by Prof. Ved Prakash.
The motto of UGC is 'Gyan-Vigyan Vimuktaye'. It was originally formed in the year 1946 with an aim to overlook the works of Central Universities of Delhi, Benaras and Aligarh.
