Kanyashree Prakalpa, an initiative by the West Bengal Government, was awarded first prize in the United Nations Public Service Award for Asia.
Out of all the 552 initiatives from 62 different countries West Bengal government's initiative was chosen as the best. The initiative is a conditional cash transfer scheme which aims at retaining the girls in schools, educational and other skill development institutes to prevent the child marriage.
Mamta Banerjee, West Bengal Chief Minister tweeted "We are delighted on behalf of our countrymen and the people of Bengal to receive the first prize on @UN Public Service".
She further said that it is high time to give importance to public voice and to the projects which are in the interest of the public.
The scheme has proven to be a huge success as more than 4 million adolescent girls are enrolled under the scheme and till date government has transferred about $500 million directly into the beneficiaries account. Currently, this scheme is being implemented through 16,000 schools and different institutes.
Earlier, Banerjee also participated in the ministerial conversation at the World Forum.
