On Monday, the Union Cabinet chaired by the PM Modi approved provisions for the reservation of the EWS category students in the Central Educational Institutions (CEIs). According to the sources, the HRD Ministry had sought the permission of the Election Commission for the same as due to elections Model Code of Conduct is in place.
"With the approval of the Cabinet, a total of 2,14,766 additional seats will be created. While 1,19,983 additional seats will be created during 2019-20 academic session, 95,783 seats will be added in 2020-21," sources said.
In order to implement the reservation for the students belonging to the EWS category, the government has sanctioned INR 4315.15 crore rupees.
On January 9, reservation for the poor from the upper caste was approved by the Rajya Sabha providing 10 percent reservation to the general category in jobs and education.
The quota will be over 50 percent reservation which is already given to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).
