All the students, who are seeking scholarships and fellowships from government recognized institutes must now provide aadhaar card as a proof of identity. This requirement was made mandatory and clear by the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry which said "the order covers fellowship schemes implemented by the University Grants Commission and All India Council for Technical Education".
Statement from the government:
"The use of Aadhaar as identity document for the delivery of services or benefts or subsidies simplifies the government delivery processes, brings in transparency and efficiency, and enables beneficiaries to get their entitlements directly in a convenient and seamless manner and Aadhaar obviates the need for producing multiple documents to prove one's identity".
More on the report:
- By June 30, all candidates must declare their Aadhaar numbers
- This order from ministry does not cover Assam, Meghalaya and Jammu and Kashmir.
Benefits of using the Aadhaar number
- Aadhar card numbers will help in bringing uniformity and transparency within and across the higher education system in the country.
- Mark-sheets and certificates with security features will help in curbing the duplication of the documents and provide easy verification of the same.
Commenting on the same, a source from the ministry said that in case students are unable to provide their aadhaar number then there will be a delay in processing the fellowship and scholarship amount.
